CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Mik was right about one thing, it wasn’t easy to conceal feelings when those feelings were growing by the second. No matter how much we tried to avoid each other, Leoni and I always managed to stray back into each other’s airspace. I couldn’t stop looking at her. I couldn’t stop imagining her. Thinking about kissing her wasn’t enough. I had to do it again.

“How you doin’?” Mik asked.

“Completely distracted,” I replied. “How about you?”

“Oh, I’m peachy.” She looked up into the blue sky. “What did you wish for in the cave.”

I peered at her over top of my big diamond sunglasses. “Do you have to ask?”

Mik chuckled. “My, you’ve come a long way fast.”

“Well, I had a great team.”

She looked over to where Leoni was laying. “I like her.”

“Good, since I think I’m completely biased at this point.”

She laughed. “No, you’re not. You know what you’re doing.”

“I do. I think.” Whether it was hormones or a rock necklace, something else had definitely taken over. “What did you wish for?”

Mik sighed. “For a million bucks … and that Jersey was here. I miss him.”

“A million bucks isn’t much these days.”

“I know. I should have said more.”

I reached over and rubbed her hand. “It’s pretty sweet that you miss him.”

“So sweet it almost makes me want to barf.”

“He really loves you, you can tell.”

Mik sighed again. “Yeah. He does.”

“You guys?” Glo called from the back. “Come and see this.”

Mik and I stood up. Two speedboats were following close in the distance. Both pulled parasailors behind them. The giant sails floated high above the water. Both Paolo and Mario were filming. Mario had the drone in the air again, while Paolo had his camera aimed high at the parasailors. Louise, Glo, and Crissy were already there watching. We stood with them. The two speedboats never broke formation as they got closer and closer. Then, our captain emerged from the bridge with four sets of binoculars standing like drinks on a tray.

Mik grabbed the first set and focused her lenses in the air. “No way,” she said. She began to wave her arm wildly. “Oh my God!”

As the speedboats came a little closer, so did the four men hanging in the air. Each wore a white tuxedo jacket and black pants and held a glass of champagne in his hand. I didn’t recognize the others since I’d never met them before, but I spotted Jersey right away.

Louise, Glo, and Crissy were laughing and waving to their husbands. They waved and shouted back. There were tears and more laughter. I stepped back to let Paolo capture the moment.

“Jersey is a special guy,” Leoni said close behind me.

It was true, he was the kind of special that knew how to make people happy. Mik was jumping in the air. Gloria and Crissy had their arm around each other and were crying happy tears. Louise was shouting up to her husband and blowing him kisses. The men looked happy too, floating up there above us. A few minutes later, the parasails began to lower.
